| Inga | From a now mothballed distillery which used to be powered by two watermills, this beautifully sherried, rich, amber dram is rather old-fashioned and genteel in style. Its initial nose reminded one panel member of three o’clock tea with her octagenarian aunt – that combination of sherry, Madeira cake and refinement. If one nosed very critically, one might detect the faintest trace of sulphur, but this contributes character, not bitterness. ‘No rough edges,’ said another panel member. Tasted neat, it’s quite delicious – full and warm with satisfying sherry notes. When water is added the nose opens out towards quiet fruitiness with a bit of buttered toast. This is borne out in the taste, which is pleasantly sweet in the finish, but with a hint of pencil erasers. All in all, an endearing dram. Not overly robust for a Society bottling, but do not underestimate its sterling strength of character. |
